Our Story

Our Story

Waves of Hope was born from a simple, heartbreaking truth: children are drowning because their families can't afford swim lessons.

Why We Started

In 2018, our founder Maria Delgado lost a neighbor's child to a preventable drowning. The family had tried to enroll their son in swim lessons, but the cost was out of reach. Maria, a certified swim instructor herself, knew she had to do something.

She started teaching free lessons out of a local community pool on weekends. Word spread. Volunteers joined. Donors stepped up. What began as one woman's response to grief became a movement — and Waves of Hope was officially founded in 2019.

I couldn't change what happened to that little boy. But I could make sure it never happened again because of money.

— Maria Delgado, Founder
